Coming up for Light

Trecho do livro

The End

Abloom were the flowers,
ablaze was my heart…
abrupt was the blow that destroyed my powers
and took away from my life
its most wonderful part.

* * *

I’ve seen a man always looking
at a worker repairing his house.

Making up his life
and what is left
of the rest of his short time.

I’ve seen a man so still,
outside the reach of the light.

Always watching
as life goes by
and his little strength is swept away.

Month after month,
week after week,
day after night…
night after day.

* * *

From the spokesmen of the world’s injustices
all we hear is a perpetual silence
about the real causes of human misfortunes.

* * *

One should not see
between hot poetry and cold science
a large gap,
a grand canyon,
an insurmountable distance.

If the latter shows what the world is,
the former knows what the world
has been so coldly doing to us.
